This year there are FemME Battles again with preliminaries in the UK, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. And I will introduce you to the bands which go to the Finals. I will do so by asking all of the bands the same questions. So, you have the same information about all the bands which are in the Finals.
The next one is ‘Pandora’s Key’, winner by audience of the “Dutch Battle”.
Thank you very much ‘Pandora’s Key’ for answering the questions.
First of all, can you tell us something about the name of your band, ‘Pandora’s Key’? What does it mean and which one of you came up with this name?
When we were searching for a new band name, we went over a long list of names that might fit us. In the end we figured out that ‘Pandora’s Key’ embodies everything we are as persons. It gives a historical angle (with the obvious Greek mythology reference) and also a hint that we unlock things with our music, rather than being those things.
What can you tell us about the history of the band?
‘Pandora’s Key’ starts in its female fronted melodic metal form in 2016. The band recently underwent mayor lineup changes, so it’s safe to say that we’re not in our original line up. We do feel however that the drive and spirit of the band remain untouched.
Please introduce yourself to us. Who are you, which instrument(s) do you play and about your musical background?
The band exists out of the following members:
Within the band is a diverse musical background. Some members are classically trained, some members never took music lessons at all and there’s even conservatory training. That’s all fine, everybody has his or her own role in the band. All that matters is that we work very well together on and off stage
Which one of you is “responsible” for the songs (lyrics and music)?
The songs are mainly written by Rowan and Sebastiaan, but that doesn’t mean that the rest doesn’t get a say in what’s written. During the rehearsals of new compositions we usually find what works and what doesn’t work. The lyrics are written exclusively by Kelly, that ensures that she can put all the emotions in there that she wants to express.
Did you release any records already and can you tell something about them?
In the winter of 2017 we released our debut ep “Prometheus’ Promise“, it contains four songs that lean heavily on the symphonic side of metal.
Preparations for a new release are being made as we speak. Our new work will be more on the melodic side.
Are you full time musicians or do you have other jobs also?
Being a full time musician is near impossible in the current day and age. So we all have day jobs or are still studying.
Can you describe your music? How would you call it?
Are you influenced by other bands? And if the answer is yes, which one(s)?
Influences differ from person to person in our band. Everybody has a different favorite style or genre and we like combine that all in our music.
What was your most cool gig so far?
Every single gig has his own unique aspect that makes it cool. We’re glad that we get to do what we do, because every gig is different in a great way.
Is there a band you want to go on tour with?
We’re open to touring with any band. It’s always great to fantasize about touring whit big names like ‘Within Temptation’ or ‘Nightwish’ and who knows, it might happen someday.
What do you think of FemME?
It’s great to have a festival that focusses om woman in metal, getting to know and see so many great bands is truly awesome.
