FemME Battle 2023: MY LAMENT

Can you tell us something about the name of the band? What does it mean and who came up with it?

My Lament means ‘Mijn klaagzang’ in Dutch. It was chosen in the early days of the band and is a reference to its doom/death-metal roots.

Can you tell us something about the history of the band? When is it established, are all the bandmembers still the same as when the band started?

My Lament is a doom/death metal band from Belgium. Founded at the end of 2002 by Stephanie, Vincent and Tim, My Lament was on stage by the end of the following year. In 2004 Paul joins on guitars, resulting in the début demo “Beneath the Hidden“ (2006) and a number of concerts. Vocalist Dimi H. leaves at the end of 2006 and is replaced by Bert de V. (Wanhoop, Nepherex records).

 My Lament records their first full-length album “Broken Leaf” in 2008, releasing it to critical acclaim in 2009 via the Russian doom metal label, “Solitude Productions”. The band plays many gigs on different locations in the Benelux. Shortly after the release, guitar player Tim leaves and is replaced by Jens D. (Throatsnapper, ex-Lemuria).

Vocalist Bert also leaves the band and is replaced by Xavier de S. (Nyrak, Plagueland, ex-Saille, …). Jens leaves the band in 2013. In 2014, Xavier leaves the band is replaced by current vocalist and guitar-player Robrecht (ex-Sfagnum). Our “Sorrow” EP is released in the Spring of 2015. The year 2022 marks the recording of a new full album, which is set to be released in 2023.

Lyric writing is done by Robrecht. Music is written by the whole band.

Are you full time musicians or do you have other jobs also?

We all have daytime jobs.

How would you call your music?

My Lament is a doom/death metal band from Belgium. With unique vocal harmonies, soaring leads, a pounding rhythm section and thoughtful lyrics, My Lament has matured into a forward-thinking foursome that doesn’t sound quite like any other band.

Draconian, Swallow the Sun, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, …

What was your most cool gig so far?

Dutch Doom Days (2009), Vlamrock As (2009), Opera Gent (2010, Heaven and Hell project), CatacombFest (2017) and many more…

Is there a band you want to go on tour with? And why this band?

My Dying Bride, since they’re masters of the genre.

What do you think of FemME?

We fully support their cause, and we’re grateful to be able to showcase a somewhat different, less symphonic, approach to metal with female participation.

Yes – of course! We met a lot of great people and bands on the way!
